Homeowner Maria Carr was delighted to find rough-hewn 12-inch planked walls beneath layers of 1970s-era wallpaper in the living room of her California cottage. She added floor-to-ceiling white paint (Cornforth White by Farrow & Ball and Ammonite by Farrow & Ball) which set the scene for her signature mix of cozy French decor. For starters, comfortable, curl-up-with-a-book furniture is the foundation for achieving a relaxing environment.

This pair is finished with wood paneling and white paint that tie in with the rest of the room. Books find a home on shelves at the head of each bed; extra linens hide in the lower bunk’s deep drawers. Bin pulls, a deep apron sink, a vintage-style faucet, and painted open shelves with wood brackets give a kitchen casual charm. Personal touches will automatically make a space feel more like home, which is what the gallery wall in this living room accomplishes. "I usually reserve them for upstairs hallways, but it made sense to do a gallery wall in this very family-focused den adjacent to the breakfast room," says Patton.

It's all about taking inspiration from rugged northern landscapes, with muted, natural colors and textures. You can never have too many cushions for a start, and adding in a sheepskin or two will increase your coziness to optimum levels! The exposed brick wall gives both character and a tactile quality and pattern is added with the fringed throw and rattan coffee table. After all, we all like to be warm and comfortable when we're in our lounge. Because at the end of a hard day's work, we all want to relax in a space that takes care of us a little too.
